“My mother said to pick the very best one, and you are IT,” is how I learned that rhyme to end. Of course, that doesn’t solve the issue of the tiger, now does it.
I grew up in a small town in Maine in the 50s, so I literally didn’t know what the word meant. I figured it was probably some kind of lizard or tree frog, so it would be easy to catch by the toe.
We said: Catch a tiger by the toe, if he hollers make him pay $50 every day. My mamma told me to throw a dish rag over my shoulder and to pick the very best one right here, (and your not it)
This (with ennie meenie miney moe again at the end) was the version in my Rhymes books, but at school everyone said "catch a tiger by the toe/ if he hollers making him pay/ 50 dollars every day. " with the optional “my mother told me to pick the very best one and you are (not) it” at the end

Better not let go if it hollers then. (Must be Shere Khan instead of Hobbes or Tigger.)
