As I am sure is the case with most men who grew up in that era, buying DC comics for a dime apiece as soon as they hit the stands and eagerly reading them were some of my fondest childhood memories. Those superheroes were idols and role models for us, and I am grateful to all the people who created and produced them.

Adams first started drawing Batman for “Brave & Bold,” a title where Batman teamed with a different character every issue. The comic book was edited by Murray Boltinoff. Fans started writing to Julius Schwartz, the editor of “Batman,” asking why Adams wasn’t drawing it. Schwartz apparently was of the opinion that Adams wasn’t good enough for that comic. Fans made clear they wanted Adams and he (with Denny O’Neil) soon became the main team on “Batman” — and the era of camp was soon left behind.
