The quote paraphrases one attributed to Richard Nixon dated sometime around 1971 or 2. I used to have it printed out on a card that was widely distributed at that time. Nixon was speaking to the press about what he perceived was a mis-characterization of something he had said. My own recollection of the quote is: “I know you believe [or think] you understand what I said, but I don’t think you realize that what I said is not what I meant.”

I know that you believe that you understand, what you think I said. But what you heard is not what I meant! I memerize that way back in 1972 and yes a quote of Richard Milhouse Nixon. Unless of course the make of the poster was lying, so he could sell more of the poster!
