Not that I’ve tried to burn a wool sweater, but I used to find patches of wool left on a Leg of Lamb I was preparing to roast. I “Wood” (would) cut it off, so perhaps that would be one way of knowing - experiencing the smell by leaving it attached.
Vegetarians can try it by clipping a small thread off a wool scarf or sweater & burning it.
The real way ta start a fire with sticks is ta make a “bow” with a cord of some kind and a pliant enough stick, then get straw like dried out stuff fer tinder, then get another stick ta use the bow ta twirl the secon’ stick on the thatch stuff. It’s the safest decent way ta do it.
