A VC hit squad figured out where the USO tour was staying in Saigon and figured it could completely demoralize the US by killing the big Hollywood star and his whole troupe. I speak, of course, of Bob Hope. But Hope and the tour took their time returning to the hotel. In fact, they took so long that the hit squad, which was basically circling the block waiting for them to return, began to fear that they’d draw suspicion. So they bombed a bank and ran like hell.
As it happened, just as the show was ending an hour or two away from Saigon, a huge gust of wind blew up and knocked over the entire stack of cue cards, scattering them across the venue. The crew not only had to collect the cards, they had to put them back in order before they left the venue so they’d be ready for the next gig. That took something like two and a half hours; plus the travel time from the venue to the hotel.
When the troupe got back to the hotel and Hope was told what had happened before they returned, his immediate response was, “Saved by the idiot cards again!!”
