Jr: Mr. Halliburton!! I have a problem with question #3!!
which one is that?
"if a slave is beaten 3 times a day for a week, how many beatings did he receive?"
Can you understand how someone might be offended?
Did I misspell something?
It is. Recently, there was a huge buzz over a suburban Atlanta elementary school teacher who has assigned story problems concerning slavery, terrorism, murder, and gory death. He was forced to resign.
From the Atlanta Voice: One of the questions on the math quiz asked: “If Frederick got two beatings per day, how many beatings did he get in one week? In two weeks?” Another question asked: “Each tree had 56 oranges. If eight slaves pick them equally, then how much would each slave pick?”
I could totally see that quiz as a “shock” sort of lesson. Slavery was real, what if the slave in the question was you or your family, then bring the lesson home. But apparently that’s not what the original quiz writers had in mind and that’s a problem.

Yes! Why are we assuming that a slave is male in this day and age?
