Back in the ’70’s when my husband was still racing sports cars.To make things equitable, all the cars of a kind were supposed be a certain weight..He drove a rusty old British sports car which usually hovered at or below the accepted weight (depending on the individual track’s scales.)Perversely, you couldn’t bolt lead blocks to the floor to make weight but it was ‘legal’ to carry hand tools. He would stuff tools into his door trim panels and cover them with towels..The last time he raced at Limerock, he had been messing with front suspension modifications and as a result, broke a kingpin just at the top of the hill at the back of the track. The result was a series of violent forward flips..It was mid-way through the race and the field was strung out..The next guy up the hill was too far back to see the actual flip but he recalls having an instant conversion to an ancient Scandinavian religion when a large knock-off hammer fell from the sky, striking the track right in front of his car..The following season, it became legal to add ballast to make weight.

Like a certain curmudgeonly school bus driver who appears in a comic elsewhere perhaps?
