I wonder if Dave Grohl knows this. He seems like a fairly smart guy.

I live in San Francisco, and I have studied Emperor Norton. I do not remotely accept that he was “crazy,” or “insane.” I think he was quite brilliant, and had a wonderful time playing to people’s sense of humor. He was revered in his day. His proclamations were often quite brilliant. He proposed the Bay Bridge, which should be known as the Emperor Norton Bridge. Once, when he came upon a mob attacking a Chinese gentleman, he simply bowed his head, and began repeating the Lord’s Prayer. The men were so shamed that they stopped, and let thir victim be, and fled. He played chess, daily at the Mechanic’s Institute, was saluted by police officers (after one took him into custody for mental illness…it was an apology from the chief), and when he died, his funeral was magnificent. It was paid for by the wealthy, and a huge crowd. And, I am most proud to say, his Requeim Mass was provided by my church, Church of the Advent, which is now Church of the Advent of Christ the King. I have visited his grave in Colma.
