With some exceptions, sequels aren’t as good as the original, Godfather II comes to mind, as expectations are so very high. But I have found enjoyment in many sequel movies and I usually trust my own opinion rather than that of critics…..
I saw the first three Star Wars films when they came out. The big thing about them was that they were something different than anything that had ever been seen before. It was a revolutionary moment in the film industry. However the later films never had that same “Wow!” effect, as they were just repaving the same road.
I was stationed overseas when the first Star Wars film was released and it wouldn’t reach us there until it played out in the US. My problem was I had a return date that fell in March ’78 and I thought for sure I would miss it entirely because it would be heading overseas while I was heading back.
As it turned out, I just made it. It was in the last week in theaters when I landed in California and I was able to catch it there before it left. As a side benefit, the theater was mostly empty, so I didn’t have to put up with the crowds.
At the time, that seemed terribly important…. now I have it on DVD and can watch it again any time I want. 8^)
Yep, I was in graduate school. We all went to see it in the downtown theater, having literally no idea what it was. The crowd of mostly college students went bananas when the first ships came across the screen and the massive size of the pursuing ship became evident.

I don’t remember how I knew about it, but I was on a line to get tickets to the first Star Wars movie. Outrageous $4 tickets! But it was worth it.

I went to the theatre for every Star Wars film, even the prequels. The only ones I disliked were the prequels; but I still went to all three.
