We celebrated it every year in my library. I would feature books by AAPI authors. Because I live in the Deep South, very few of my students had ever heard of the struggles of AAPI’s in the USA. Or the extreme prejudice they faced on the West Coast. Or the horrors they faced in Angel Island.
When I was a school media specialist I celebrated all Heritage Months. AAPI month was the biggest eye opener for my students. I live and work in the Deep South. My students were African American or Latinx American. They had only heard of Asians as being “the perfect minority” and getting perfect grades. They had never heard of Angel Island or the exclusionary practices of Oregon or Washington state.
