LOL Instead of stars over his head, Carl has spinning cold cuts.

    Terrible sandwich metaphor. Sorry!

I live in the UK and read a Scottish newspaper called The Sunday Post with a comic strip called “Oor Wullie” in. One of the strips had a wonderful use of printed fight effects and also stars. I have described it before on Nancy Classics, Andy Capp and Calvin and Hobbes:-

Wullie turned down an invitation to rollerskate with his “sometime girlfriend” Primrose. A blonde then asked him to rollerskate with her instead and Wullie replied, “Try and stop me, hen. I’m not bashful!” Wullie’s girlfriend had overheard this and tripped Wullie up. It then turned out that the blonde was two-timing a boy herself. Like Primrose, the boy took his anger out on Wullie. In the first panel of the bottom strip, Wullie had stars around his head and the boy was saying, “What were you doing with my lass, Doris?” Wullie replied, “Your l-lass, ooer!” The second panel of the bottom line had some English and Scottish words to signify violence – THUMP! SMASH! SKUD! BLOOTER! CRUNCH! BANJO! – and some more stars. The final panel showed Wullie with more stars spinning around his head and he now had a black eye, a lump on his head, bruises and a sticking plaster between his lump and his black eye. “Not bashful, eh?” scoffed Primrose, “You look well-bashed to me! Ha! Ha!”

Blooter is a Scottish word meaning “To hit hard”. “Blootered” can also be Scottish for drunk.

Has Carl met his match? Has Gary released the beast within him? Was that sub sandwich meant for Spud? Tune in next time for Sandwich Sir? or Balogna Beatdown.

I am reminded that many years ago in the strip Bloom County Opus the penguin got into the news for hitting some threatening characters with an olive loaf he had just purchased. This is the first time since then that I’ve seen weaponized cold cuts!

It’s a GREAT sound effect if you mis-pronounce and say “boe-log-na!” Also, pretty sure that gloom/doom dripping “sandwich” in panel 3 is a threat.

Maybe it’s a question of who has the stronger imagination – Spud or Wallace. I can’t believe Spud’s imagination is stronger than Wallace’s.
