    Given. But if there is no existing person, is there still a “whom” to address?Can a no one (or nothing) be a “whom”?

    Yes. There is someone, identity unknown.Declension is overrated, though. I like “who” in Omar’s question (and have no problem ending the sentence with a preposition).
