On my trips to Europe I’ve come across several open spaces in and around small towns and villages that are cordoned off with huge boulders to prevent gypsies from taking up temporary residence. No-one I’ve met ever had a good thing to say about them. I’m pretty sure I haven’t met any gypsies yet!
I know this is very politically incorrect, but gypsies did earn a reputation for stealing. It has nothing to do with some natural tendency or disposition to criminal behavior. It has to do with a cultural norm developing among an isolated population. They had to survive by whatever means they could as they roamed Europe without real property, and that meant becoming adept at stealing. Most, I think, in the modern world have left that culture behind. To survive through the centuries among unfriendly neighbors, Jews developed a culture of knowledge and education that has served them well and lead them into success in science and finance. I don’t believe they are inherently superior to any other group, it’s just that they developed a cultural path that lead them there. I worked with a lot of people from India (due to the H1-B visa program) that were engineers and researchers, and they are successful because of the high value India places on education.
