Actually professors work considerable loads (I know many and would like to be one, but the job market is horrible)–teaching, grading, meetings, research, it can easily add up to 60 hours a week.
And the average prof does not make much money. The starting salary at most places for a new Ph.D. is about $40,000. I was once offered $36,000 a year at a school in Denver. Those “exorbitant salaries” are the exception, by far, and not the rule.
I wish.
I get paid for 9 months a year, but only if I get a minimum number of students in my classroom. Otherwise my salary is reduced.
For 3 months a year I must get my own research funds to cover my salary.
And, in addition to teaching, I have to write project proposals to various agencies – over a dozen a year –, research papers, supervise grad students and maintain a public profile.
Many of my colleagues haven’t slept 40 hours a week in years!
And yeah, my student just took up a job after his PhD. His starting salary was way more than I make. Our salary isn’t going up for the next two years due to a pay freeze..
Why do we do it? Some of us like to teach.. really!
