According to Wiki, the origins are under dispute but it may have been brought to America by Dutch settlers. The earliest recorded usage of the term is 1808 so they’ve been around a while, and sometimes they taste like it!
What I heard once is that the Donuts (Dough nut) was mainly used by some sailors, probably the Dutch? and the reason for the ring shape is that the captain of the ship kept it on the steering wheel and it was easy with a hole in the middle!
Saw that on some cooking show on TV, dunno if it’s true!
Wikipedia’s article on the doughnut is strange. It refers to the origins of the doughnut as such in the early 1800’s, but then goes off to discuss many other ethnic, international pastries - which (however luscious and fascinating) are not doughnuts. At best they are proto-doughnuts.
There is some evidence that native Americans had doughnuts prior to occupation by us. So they invented them, or at least did so independently of others. I like this idea. Native Americans (North and South) were very creative with what they ate, drank and smoked. Witness popcorn, chocolate milk, coffee, tobacco…
Everything that has trans-fats can be made with non-hydrogenated oil. The oil just won’t keep as long, and the food will probably cost a little more. Heaven forbid people shell out a few more pennies for fresher, healthier food.
Today’s First Peoples cook and eat fry-bread, which as far as I have experienced it, does not contain high sugar amounts. When I order it from tradition sources it comes with honey.
While I am not sure about it, I think they developed fry-bread after they had to rely on government commodities, which included lard and refined flower.
AARON You’re right, 2 Boston Creams are the correct order, Though a dozen may seem to benefit from economies of scale, the twelfth doughnut will be slightly stale in the hour and a half it takes to devour the other eleven. Luckily Dunkin Donuts is practically next door so I can tell when they have a fresh batch by the police cars.
Donut eaters beware. When the esteemed Supreme Court Nominee was asked in the Senate, “Should Americans be forced to eat vegetables”, she hemmed and hawed. Those honest men of the chamber could not get a yes or no from her. What if they asked about doughnuts?

Apparently , Sir Rodney is a better economist than warrior. When you close a free market, a black-market opens up.

I’m pretty sure donuts were invented right after the first police force was established. So, I’d google “police” and go from there.

If doughnuts are outlawed only outlaws will have doughnuts. Now I think I understand the gun reference. That would include all cops.

The north and south american natives hadn’t invented the wheel, so I believe their doughnuts were square.
Am I right or did I get up too early this morning?

Twelve years ago I had a heart attack and went into a two week coma with a donut still in my mouth. Hadn’t wanted one since.
I love the look on the Fink’s face!
