He continued the strip in the same vein. The look of the Simpsons changed because many other artists were hired who refined the characters and the style. Groening’s own work retained its raw look. I always wondered if he was somewhat influenced by Johnny Hart, who was already doing the large upper lip, no chin look.

I picked Groening because his style is distinctive and recognizable, and because he’s an important cartoonist. I also like the writing style, which sadly faded from the Simpsons. Not that other writers’ styles were unwelcome, but they tended to crowd out that specific ‘Groening voice.’ I also spoofed him here: http://www.webcomicsnation.com/scottartist/parodies/series.php?view=archive&chapter=25960I wondered what the Simpsons might have been like if Groening himself had done it as a strip. This is just a guess.

I notice some readers are still confused by the deliberate misspellings of the cartoonists names this week. But Groening is pronounced like ‘Graining’ anyway. Yes, it rhymes with ‘raining,’ not with ‘groaning.’

I almost did one with the big silhouette (which would have been Rita or Dana in place of Binky,) but went instead with a take on Groening’s multi panel explorations. And yeah, the enlarge is most useful for this one. We didn’t choose the display size- though for a week or so they had the strip too big.
