Does this mean that all nose-to-the-grindstone middle managers are masters of artless living?

Not to nitpick but that is not right. Pâtisserie is a place of business, pastry chef is a pâtissier (in English the accent is often left out but the word still stands). The same goes for boulangerie (bakery) vs. boulanger (baker).

Reminds me of an illustration in a book: A man is sawing a board; another is sitting and reading. The caption is: “Which man is working? Which man is playing?”

Steve Allen was once the celebrity chair of National Hobby Month. An interviewer asked what his hobbies were and he replied, “I don’t know; I enjoy a lot of things, but I seem to make money from them.”
