I can handle a weeks worth of clothes. Try doing 2 1/2 weeks of clothes for an overseas trip for a family of 4 during the winter (i.e. sweaters and other thick clothes)
@lightenup: the strategy to flying in cold climate during cold season is to put all the bigger items on yourself and then arrange them in the airplane. This way, all your bulkier coats, boots etc are not taking place in the luggage.
Space bags actually work for travel. I bought a couple last year for a business trip. Pack stuff, squeeze out the air and lots of room in the suitcase. Didn’t wrinkle my clothes either.

This about how airlines are…I flew home for Christmas, and had to squeeze my weeks worth of clothes into one suitcase to avoid fees!!!

Some people do send their luggage FedEx/UPS to avoid the hassle and lost luggage problems.
