We were friends and just because we can’t see eye to eye, we should try to get along. There ain’t no good guys, there ain’t no bad guys. There’s only you and me and we just disagree.
Shortly after we moved from Connecticut to South Carolina we went to a nearby civil war re-enactment. One of the players asked my 7 yo daughter if she knew the significance between the blue uniforms and the grey uniforms. “Sure, you’re in grey which makes you a bad guy.”
History is usually written by the winning side. But in the U.S. today, we write our history with us as the bad guys. Well except for that one war we fought with ourselves? strange.
This is OBVIOUSLY a Civil War Memorial. The people who fought for the dissolution of the Union were NOT PATRIOTS or GOOD GUYS in ANY sense of the word!!!!!! Mother’s sent their children to DIE to preserve a system where HUMAN BEINGS were LEGALLY RAPED, TORTURED AND MUDERED. I am not saying that the Northern States were perfect or pure of heart – but they were fighting to end SLAVERY. So let’s be clear here – the GOOD GUYS WERE AGAINST SLAVERY!!!!! Why is this so hard for everyone????
In this day and age, there are still those of us who want to live our life the way we want. That was what the Civil war was about. The South wanted to live a certain way. The North didn’t want that to be part of the Union. Today, we are still fighting over how we want to live. Guns, education, gender, etc…None of us really want to be told how to live by someone else. So, we go to the polls, elect people, fight over the results…sometimes by protesting, sometimes with violence. We really haven’t changed much.
The vast majority of Northern soldiers fought to SAVE THE UNION. They were actually SHOCKED later to find out that Lincoln changed his story, and made it sound like he fought the South to free the slaves. The main reason Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, was because he was shocked that the South did not get defeated immediately. This proclamation was a MILITARY tactic, hoping that slaves in the south, now declared FREE by Lincoln, would REBEL in the South, thus creating a viable new war front. People in the North at first would take their picnic baskets out to watch the war early on, thinking this war would end quickly, and that the South would not be able to stop it.
Most people don’t know that if Lincoln was not murdered, he was planning to put all African-Americans on reservations, similar to what we did with Native Americans.
Also, most people do not look at the Civil War from an international point of view. Britain, Italy, Germany and other countries in Europe, because of their trade with the US South, were about to join the war, making it the actual WWI. However, because of a strange turn of events (Lincoln was friends with the Czar of Russia), the Czar ordered their ENTIRE naval fleet to both the west and east coast major ports of the USA. That was the real reason why the South lost.
I am of course against slavery. But the North hated African-Americans just as much as the South, and in fact, hated them more, once the slaves were free, and came north to compete with whites to get jobs. The North simply did not have the economic use the same as the south.
It still strikes me strange that the USA was the only country in the world to have to go to Civil war to end slavery. And it should be pointed out that it was the DEMOCRATIC PARTY that was pro-slavery, and later on, created the KKK, and Jim Crow laws. Then in the 1960,s, the Dem Party tried to RE-WRITE history,

The difference between good guys and bad guys depends on what part of the country you live in.

There are no good guys or bad guys in war. Only dead guys or traumatized guys… oh yeah, or politicians. They come out ok.

There are no “good” or “bad” guys in wars. Each side thinks they are in the right. And after the war there are no winners or losers, just survivors.

This looks like one of the old memorials along the Mason-Dixon Line. Of course, on the other side, the labels were reversed.

When all is said and done, cannon fodder on both sides, no matter how brainwashed, are sad cases that deserve respect and even sympathy.
But I suspect that’s Wilson’s whole point.
On the other hand, that’s NOT to deny that there often are good sides and bad sides.
