When I judged science fair contest there was often an indication the student didn’t do the project. If you asked them, they nearly all were honest. The one notable example was the son of the school’s science teacher who revealed his catapult was actually not his at all. His teacher father saved it from a previous year.
When I was in college, I did a project where we hooked a microcomputer (the IBM PC had yet to be invented) to an IBM Selectric typewriter. I got to tell my interviewers that I wrote the code that typed my resume. Helped me get my first job.
