I was on watch at a USN facility in Scotland when TMI happened. It was the middle of the night, and we were listening to Radio Moscow World Service. They announced that “An atomic plant in Pennsylvania has blown up, radiating and killing thousands!”We had one man on watch who was from there and he panicked. We spent a couple of hours trying to find out exactly what really happened. Finally had to use our always-live secure TTY link with, um, “an office in DC” to find out. The regular media were then, just as now, useless for getting facts.

Of course you do realize that (a) the containment did exactly what it’s supposed to and nothing got out and (b) no-one died…
