Adam: Hey, what are you doing? Laura: Throwing out this turkey. It expired yesterday. Adam: Expired? That's nonsense. Turkey doesn't go bad. They just want you to buy more turkey. 'Tis a bit gamey for turkey. Laura: No kisses for you until the incubation period passes.

Is it sliding around on your tongue like it has a lubricated gel coating Adam? That’s why we have the sense of smell. To avoid the rancid slime making it into your mouth.
Always listen to women when it comes to expired food. We sense it before men do.

Is it 7 to 10 days after opening?

Our rule is - “IF in doubt, throw it OUT!”

Laura, don’t let that spoiled turkey eat the spoiled turkey.

“Turkey doesn’t go Bad?” What world are you on Adam?
I think Adam is headed for the mother of all bad cases.

If it’s that bad today, it probably wasn’t so good yesterday either. On the whole, though, expiration dates are overly cautious…

I always look for that rainbow color on lunch meat to know when it is most tasty!

Those aren’t “expiration” dates. “They’re “sell by” dates. Beyond those dates, they still have an expected shelf life for home use.

the turkey I buy has both a “sell by” and a “consume by” date.
I’ll usually go a day or two past the “consume” date but not much more as it does get slimy and stinky.

What I see a lot of is “Best if used by…” Of course, that wording isn’t really telling you when it’ll go bad, just the point when it might not be optimal anymore.

That date doesn’t matter once the package is opened. Most sources say it lasts about 5 days after that. So if the package says 06/15/10 and you open it on the 1st, you don’t keep it to the 15th.
