Katy: Mom, can I have a whoa, what is that smell? Laura: Ha! I'm cooking brussels sprouts. Katy: It smells like dad's office on a bad day! Laura: Sorry. They can be kind of pungent. Katy: Well, I can feel the pungentness sticking to my hair and skin! I'm gonna have to shower twice tomorrow! If that smells stays on me for school, I"m gonna have to transfer! Laura: Adam, tell your daughter she's being melodramatic. Adam: Phwhoah! Smells like a skunk lost a fight with a port-o-potty!

Brussels sprouts… or what my dad used to call “fetal cabbages.”

They don’t smell like that if you roast them. Boiling them ruins good brussels sprouts.

Trim, slice in half, toss with olive oil, salt and pepper and roast in 400 degree oven for 20 minutes. YUM!

I don’t like brussels sprouts but I love the word ‘pungent’. So descriptive and I use it mostly in relation to skunks.

If you get Brussels sprouts from the frozen section, you’re purchasing them pre-ruined. If you don’t overcook them, they’re wonderful.

I absolutely do NOT like brussels sprouts………….but………I buy a bag of very healthy “salad” that has kale, broccoli, cabbage and brussels sprouts…….all with tiny slices, and with a salad dressing, the whole thing is very good. (and healthy). Go figure!

Remove the leaves from the core and saute in butter with salt and pepper. Takes a bit of time, but well worth it – serve as a bed under sauteed salmon. Yum.

Properly cooked sprouts do not stink. By properly cooked I mean “not overcooked.”

I learned recently that half the population tastes the bitterness in brussel sprouts and the other half don’t. That explains why I hate them. They taste very bitter to me.

I hate brussels sprouts with a passion. A lot of it is the smell, but also negative experiences with them in the distant past. But reading many of the comments here with all those simple yet appealing recipes, I think it’s time for me to give them a new chance. I love trying food that I have never tried before, and every now and then I revisit a food that I have always disliked. Occasionally I discover that it’s not nearly as bad as I recalled, and sometimes it’s actually very good. I consider those moments huge revelations, and I cherish them.

I would eat them….…if my hands and feet were securely tied to a chair, and my mouth pried and held open with some sort of clamp, and the things were somehow forced into my throat and down my gullet….…as I said, I would eat them!

Today’s strip was made for Alexikakos. Wonder what he would have said about the brussel sprouts and all our suggestions.

Strod, yes, it has been a while, now that you mention it. Alexi (that’s what I call him) has disappeared before for a couple of months. I enjoy his recipes and have printed out quite a few of his for myself. I hope he is okay, but as I said, he has disappeared before.

Brussel sprouts aren’t bad. But they have to be cooked in a 2 or 3 step process.1. Steam or boil the brussel sprouts – steam is healthier choice – until just soft.2. Next, pan-fry the brussel sprouts to just a light brown.3. Create ahead of serving time a fruit drizzle of orange juice, mayo and cream to be used over the brussel sprouts. In lieu of this home-made drizzle, use a store brand creamy salad dressing of your choice.
