True love does cost. When you love somebody (other than yourself), you sacrifice things for their welfare and/or happiness. The greater the love, the greater the sacrifice that is paid.
The best example was that of Jesus. He laid aside the privileges of heaven to live a sinless life and to die in our place so that we can be reconciled with our creator. “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13)
This is the type of love that we need to show. However, none of us fallen people are willing to sacrifice all we have for the benefit of others. Part of our basic selfish nature always wants to keep something to ourselves. Whether it be money, time, or even personal rights, we are unable to totally surrender on our own to truly love others.
