Well, the useless holidays strewn throughout our calendar aren’t really that useless in one respect. They make up in large part for the fact that Americans, on the whole, get fewer days of paid vacation than pretty much any other developed nation. Even WITH President’s Day and Columbus Day and MLK Day and so on, I think we average more days per year spent on the job than just about anyone else.
(I don’t have data to back that up, but if anyone wants to look into it I’d be interested in knowing the result. FishStix, if you’re tired of agreeing with me here’s a chance to resume our comfortable opposition.)
