In the ’90s my dad, then in his late ’70s, signed up for an adult school class in Word Perfect for Windows. He forced them to give him a refund when he found out that he also had to learn Windows.
I guess graphic design draws from many disciplines, and you have to understand how your designs will interact with the full breadth of history and personal experience of every person observing it. You should probably also be able to speak at least twelve languages.

If you’re not looking to get another degree, most community colleges will let you just take whatever class you want to pay for.

Did you try to audit a class? Most colleges at which I taught allowed citizens to audit classes usually at a reduced tuition.
