Technically, Mitosis involves the replication of the Nucleus (so that each has identical set chromosomes). It is usually followed by Cytokinesis (Cell Division). In some cells (like skeletal muscle cells), mitosis may occur without cell division – producing multinucleated cells.
Here’s a something I had my students use to remember the order of the phases of Mitosis: “I P on the MAT” where I = Interphase, P = Prophase, M = Metaphase, A = Anaphase, and T = Telophase.
[Note: Though Interphase technically is not part of mitosis (being between one mitosis and the next), it is when the chromosomes replicate – without which mitosis could not occur.
