The Village is a much better place to exchange personal information than the main strip. My tale about my youth in Panama is one example. I felt much better about relating here than I would have on AC.
You’re all probably right. I may never leave. I just need to figure out how to save the link so I can access it without backtracking.Fan you asked me how i got to where I am…sometimes I wonder myself but… due to circumstances that I can honestly say were out of my control, I wound up in a number of exotic places – some for a longer time than others ( 3 months work in Tahiti doesn’t count – every day off I had it rained ! ).I started out as a brat actor around age 8 and much to the chagrin and dismay of my poor parents, actually got a lot of parts. I always had a good ear and was a natural mimic and picked up languages – except Latin – easily. I was fortunate enough to have been able to travel a great deal prior to doing it on Uncle Sam’s dime. I’ve got to run – Fridays being what there are but I’ll be happy to continue the saga on Monday.Have a great weekend everyone !
I’m going to watch a few “Prisoner” episodes as soon as I can! I’ve always heard it was that rare beast of a cult favorite that was also a true classic. I did watch “The Avengers” way back when and have an old paperback book based on the show. The comic book character “Black Canary” and Emma Peel were probably sisters…. In other news, I’ve been watching “Black Adder” episodes recently. I’ve seen them before, of course, but it had been a few years, and that ol’ Adder itch kind of got me!
Good Afternoon Villagers !I keep forgetting to check in and find out what going on in the Far Side of the world.
@pcolliRe: Spanish websites…Google has an automatic translator that you can set to translate web pages into English ( or visa versa ). It works relatively well – enough for you to get the git of what is on the site, if you don’t speak or read the language.
@Number Six If your future employer won’t take into account severe weather conditions as a preclusion for not showing up, then you don’t want to work for the bugger, in the first place !Still, I hope they hire you. They don’t know what they’re missing.
@beviekFailing finding a ball cap, there’s a little slim opener with no sharp edges to tear things that fits on your guy’s ( or your ) key chains. I’ve had mine for years. Budweiser and Miller used to give them out as free promos to bars and restaurants. Whatever logo mine had, has long worn off, so I don’t remember where I stole appropriated it from.
You asked me a question about a month ago that I’m not sure I completely answered. My mother and grandparents were born in Portadown, Northern Ireland – long before it became Northern Ireland. As I result, both my late brother and I were able to obtain dual Irish and American citizenship. The Irish passport – especially in the pre EU days, came in very handy to go to countries that an American passport wasn’t exactly welcomed. The only reasons I didn’t retire there or in the U.K. had to do with weather and cost of living – one was too low and the other too high !
Even before I married my wife here in Ecuador, I had obtained a permanent visa here and my cedula ( National I.D. ) which entitled me to all the rights and privileges – including voting of an Ecuadorian citizen – the only catch being. that for the first three years of your permanent visa, you cannot be out of the country for more than a cumulative 180 days. After that it doesn’t matter. You can apply for full citizenship after 5 years, but being married to an Ecuadoriana, as I am, and already having dual citizenship, there’s no real value in doing that.I don’t need need another passport. We jointly own property etc. with no government hassles that I would face as being, simply, a gringo jubilado ( retiree ).
@beviekMy standard traveling ‘must carry’ tool is a professional wine waiter’s bottle opener. Although I lost my favorite to TSA on one of my travels ( it was in my shaving kit and they still confiscated it ! ), I have acquired several good ones over the years. They’re flat and easy to carry – have a cork screw, curved blade for cutting the wire or wax around the wine bottle,a small flat blade and the better ones also have a bottle opener. These are far easier to use, once you get used to them, than the butterfly openers or all the expensive fancy wine openers on the market.
My luck with a ball cap/ bottle opener would be that I’d lose it somewhere.
@Number SixI hope the job is as interesting as the pub. What sort of work will you be doing? I was never able to ride a bike to any of my jobs. However once early in my career I was able to actually walk to work. This didn’t last long though. I wish you a long, satisfying and rewarding (financially and otherwise) career.

@Linguist and other recently added Villagers:This is a little personal history which I have cobbled together from posts of mine dating back over a year. Excuse how it is somewhat fractured.======The year was 1940. My mother and I packed up our 1937 LaSalle and she drove us from San Antonio to New Orleans to board the SS Toloa for our cruise to the Panama Canal Zone to join my father who was working there.-The ship was a United Fruit “Banana Boat” which also transported some passengers and other cargo. Our car was also loaded on board. The trip took about a week with stops in Havana and Honduras. We were able to do some sightseeing at each stop.-My dad met us in Colon. The car was unloaded and we drove to our new home in Diablo Heights.
===Picking up where I left off on my great Panamanian adventure: We lived in Diablo Heights for a few months then moved to a larger apartment in Balboa where I enrolled in school for the eighth grade. I got myself an after-school job setting pins in the Officer’s Club bowling alley. It paid 3 cents a line and the pins were all set up manually. No machinery in those days. I really enjoyed my year in the Canal Zone. Perfect weather, Year round Springtime. No winter. -In the Summer of 1941 it was decided that my mother and I would head back to Texas. Europe was at war and it looked like the U.S. may get involved. Pearl Harbor was yet to happen.-We headed back to Colon where we boarded the SS Ulua, another banana boat, for our trip back. It was almost identical to the trip there, except we stopped in Costa Rica instead of Honduras.===Continuing my Panama rant: By the time my dad was to return to Texas (about 1942) we were at war and Nazi U-Boats were sinking ships in the Gulf of Mexico.- http://www.cnn.com/2014/07/16/us/gulf-of-mexico-shipwrecks-world-war-ii/-He had booked passage on a ship that was sunk but wisely chose to fly back. The Pan-American highway was incomplete at that time so he could not drive back. He sold the LaSalle and booked a flight to Mexico City. Airline service was very spotty in those days, so he booked a separate flight to Monterey and then a bus to Nuevo Laredo where he crossed the Rio Grande to Laredo, TX. He bought a 1938 Chevrolet which he drove back to join us in San Antonio.-By this time my older brother, who did not go to Panama, had joined the Marines and was stationed aboard shipin the Pacific.

Hi Villagers – In my opinion this Village needs a shot in the arm to survive. I think fresh blood is the answer. Any suggestions?
