I like how Balthazar avoids out and out falsehoods. The prez did not in fact “flee” the capital. And in the first report, she had in fact seen him “in person” (from a distance) “hours” (well, more like 24 or so) before. Of course, the end result is still a lie.
This reminds me of the story of when a head of state – I think it was the Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia – came to Montreal for Expo 67. He brought his whole cabinet with him so that he could keep an eye on them and prevent them from plotting his overthrow. Worked then but unfortunately for him ambitious people aren’t restricted to cabinet posts.
