Gene is trying to reach Susan by phone. He thinks, "Funny, I call Susan and get a busy signal.." Gene continues, "And a minute later, I call and get her machine." Gene feels, "I know she's there!" Gene finally comes to a realization as to Susan's intentions. It is represented by a 'ton of bricks' which have fallen on Gene.
