Michael Anthony Monsoor was born on this day in 1981. He joined the U.S. Navy in 2001 and became a Navy SEAL in 2004. He was assigned to Delta Platoon, SEAL Team Three which went to Iraq in 2006. During a joint operation with Iraqi soldiers, an attacker threw a grenade which bounced off his chest onto the roof they were on. He was the only member of his team in position to get clear in time, but instead he quickly smothered the grenade with his body. He died half an hour later, having saved the lives of his team and several Iraqi soldiers as well. He received the Medal of Honor for his selfless bravery, and the new guided missile destroyer USS Michael Monsoor will proudly bear his name. Monsoor would have been 31 today.
