Mary Lou: You're not discouraged, are you?
Gene: No, just tired!
Gene: Well, maybe a little! Our garden was such a flop!
Mary Lou: Gene! That's the way gardening IS!!
Gene: So you're telling me we're doing it right?
If the critters are stealing too many things, snap a clamshell around a growing tomato or apple on the tree, the kind that produce comes from the grocery store in—with airholes already built in for drainage in case of rain.

I can relate. Although I like the tomatoes from my own garden, I really have never gotten my money out of them for one reason or another.

Set aside 1/3 for the bugs, 1/3 for the animals, 1/3 for disease, 1/3 for weather, and you get what’s left.
