Unless I’m in something like Delta sleep, I wake up and grab the blanket and sheet when my dearly beloved heaves into bed. He has to thrash around for a couple of minutes and try to haul the coverings onto his side. When I get into bed I enter from the head of the bed, pull the covers up from the bottom, and lie still after a few seconds. I’ve described and demonstrated this process, but it remains an alien concept to him.
Still, I wouldn’t trade places with my friend, whose terrific husband died suddenly a month ago after 62 years of marriage.(Her mother had said she couldn’t marry until she completed high school, so she got married the day after graduation.) My husband’s and my 55th anniversary was yesterday.
