Janis: I wish they wouldn't put the labels on catsup upside down!
Arlo: That's so it's at the "top", ready to pour!
Janis: I KNOW that!
Janis: I still wish they wouldn't do it!!
Yeah, like when they moved the shirt label from the collar to the lower left, or removed the label altogether. I can’t keep track of how many times I’ve put a t-shirt on backwards.
Up is down, down is up… what’s next? Tea parties on the ceiling!? It’s anarchy! “Tradition, discipline, and rules must be the tools. Without them – disorder! Chaos! Moral Disintegration! In short, you have a ghastly mess!”
Right, but if you stock them “upside down”, people won’t buy them because “there is something wrong with them”. It works for empty boxes as well if you don’t want customers disturbing the ones left out to keep the product off the floor. People are weird.
When I was a little kid, about 65 years ago, I noticed we never had ketchup in our house. When I asked why my Dad told me that using ‘that stuff’’ was an in-your-face insult to the cook, or worse, to your host. So, over the years, my wife and I never had ketchup on anything she made for us and our three children are the same. Now our three grandchildren never use it either.
The word will get around. When someone gives you food do you say, “This is awful! Can I hide the taste with some tomato paste?”
Same goes for in a restaurant. Why would a person pay good money out of pocket for a restaurant meal and then hide the actual taste with a cheap condiment – of any kind?
This type of bottle is a very good design. But a lot of people can’t figure out that you need to put it back down correctly after you use it. I’ve watched people at picnics put it back wrong many times.
When I was a kid, we never put ketchup or mustard in the fridge, and as far as I recall, nobody died of food poisoning. I understood that the vinegar ingredient kept them from spoiling. I resent the space these take in the fridge now, and cold mustard is blech. If I think of it in time, I put them out while dinner is cooking.
Yup… and what I have noticed is that a lot of the people who disdain ketchup will proceed to drown their food in mayonnaise, which covers the actual flavor of the food a lot more than a small amount of ketchup does.
Ketchup is used to cover up the taste of Bad Cooking..Of course, there will always be those among us who just Love their sweet Tomato Paste, so we should not be too hard on them..When I was in the Navy, the Mess Decks were required to Keep Track of Ketchup consumption. If the crew began using more Ketchup than Normal, someone had to have a Little Talk with the Cooks about Food Quality..
It’s fine with me that the labels on some hair conditioners are put on upside down. Makes it unnecessary to shake the bottles as the bottle empties out. Perhaps it helps to have the shampoo labels right side up on the bottles if customers don’t look too closely at the S & C labels; they’re more likely to notice the difference in where the caps are than what the label actually says the bottle contains, shampoo or conditioner.
Where I live, none of the stores stock the normal Heinz, only the upside-down kind. I like Heinz much better than Hunts, but I buy Hunts because it comes in a normal bottle. And I won’t buy the upside-down conditioner, either.
It is catsup. Catsup is the name of the product in general. Ketchup is the Heinz brand name of their version. Catsup used to be more of a soup, served in a bowl to eat, not a condiment.
Same husband also hates the upside bottles as he says they come out too fast. I had been storing the bottles upside down even when they were not made that way so I did not have to hear about the thin liquid that came out when they were stored right side up. Then the company copied what I was doing.

What’s even more confusing about the ketchup is that some squeeze bottles are made to be kept upside down and some aren’t.
Doesn’t matter whether it’s a big bottle or a small one, and some of the upright ones have wide caps too.
Make up your minds, Heinz!

Every time I leave one of those topside down in my fridge, it leaks ketchup juice
