Actually, the term “penguin” was originally applied to the now-extinct (as of 1844) great auk, of the Northern Hemisphere. Even though it was related to puffins, rather than to the birds known today as penguins, the great auk was similar to penguins because it was flightless, it was black and white, and it ate fish.
