    Oh! I just took it to mean that she thought the rain was crule. And that having to play hockey in the wind and rain was crule.

    But now that I read my comment I see what everyone means. I think crule may be one of those words like clue. In some older detective novels especially british you see it spelt clew not clue. So maybe creul is also spelt crule. IMHO.

    My reading was that we’re meant to imagine that Lottie is melodramatically overpronouncing “cruel” with some kind of affectation.
