I tend to agree with margueritem. My brothers would hold their forks during grace in such a way they could stab anyone trying to take the food off of their plate. (Now we generally pray BEFORE the food is placed on the plates.)

I originally read it as Baldo had helped himself to some rinds before the food was placed on the table, and Tia Carmen had smacked him for being greedy. I can also see RRAmom’s interpretation. Maybe Carlos will tell us what the cartoonists had in mind…

I think more likely Baldo probably says something about Tia Carmen’s hot pork rinds that makes Tia Carmen mad and punch at Baldo’s upper arm. Poor thing, Baldo for having an awful bruise!
