It should be âpeopleâs self-respectâ. âPeoplesâ self-respectâ would only apply if the intent was to describe the self-respect of entire populations (the German people, the Spanish people, the German and Spanish peoples).
Normally, the apostrophe comes after the final letter in plural possessives (âgirlsâ dresses, horsesâ hoovesâ). Since âpeopleâ is already a plural, the apostrophe goes before the âsâ in the possessive. Similarly, you have âmenâs magazinesâ, âchildrenâs toysâ, etc.
