The only one that fits is Baldo as Zits. Gracie as Lucy Van Pelt?——Pleassssse. Tia Carmen as Blonde?—Blondie lives up to her name. And Dad makes Pap look like a genius. I think America is going to change, not Baldo’s family. This is why we eat German hot dogs on the 4th of July We have the day off to go to the Columbus parade The police pulled me over on Cinco de Mayo (or was it seis?) The banks close on MLK day. The Irish don’t get March 17th off, but don’t show on the 18th

    Halilujah, My ancestors were imigrants!

@ OtraVez - the nature and tone of your comments seems more than vaguely familiar - like those of a recently-departed-from-GoComics commenter. Nicht wahr?

Well, we all always celebrated so many different kinds of holidays every year. Just enjoy celebrating for these holidays respectively! :-) For example, St. Patrick’s Day, we always celebrate about the Irish culture. Why do we have to wear green clothes? When a person doesn’t wear the green clothes; otherwise, one person will pinch on another person’s upper arm. I think it is such a silly but that is the way they are. Crazy! :-/ By the way, I am 1/4 of Irish and also, English, Scottish and German. :-)

Dry Yikes I don’t want that jalapeno jam. No way! I don’t like hot spices. Sorry! :-) You can take it that you want so badly! :-)

To me, that’s a very limited view of assimilation, although it seems to mesh with the dictionary definition. I always thought of assimilation as more of a two-way street - with both cultures gaining something in the exchange (albeit with the dominant culture changing less than the minority culture), so as to get the best of both worlds.

In Star Trek, the great assimilators, the Borg, didn’t much care about assimilating species that didn’t offer something new to the collective. It didn’t stop them, but they were more interested in species that had something different that the collective could absorb and take advantage of.

Otra vez means “another time” or something similar doesn’t it (my high school espanol was a long time ago)? Sounds like someone’s coming back “otra vez” to me …

All our ancestors were immigrants, even if you are 100 percent native American.

What is the real point being made in this strip? That Latinos assimilating into American culture will completely lose theirs, and should keep waving their Mexican flags at American events?

I think he should have put Lola as Carmen, and maybe Calvin’s dad as the father.

And for the record, the US is the country of immigrants assimilating into the American culture, which is why we’re the “melting pot.”

If you want occul… sorry, accultration, then move to Canada, known as the quilt or mosaic, where they encourage you to keep your own culture.

MLK was not a foreign import.
