It’s possible Brian is right…I’m thinking the same thing…. maybe Elliot IS an ape, and Joan is merely trying to keep him from looking silly in those swim trunks.
And yeah, if that’s how it is, the shoes ARE a problem.
Our own Sheriff has a hard time remembering to stay shod while on duty… and he hates dress shoes even more than his official BCPD boots.

I don’t want to sound prejudiced against mixed marriages, but I do know it can be difficult for a human like Joan, if she’s actually married to an ape.
You never know whether some bit of behavior you find unacceptable is terribly necessary to someone of the…er.. simian persuasion…or when they just can’t understand human reluctance to embrace things they consider entertaining…Or even when they’re going to fling … um… things.
