    The story was supposedly about H.C. Andersen (not …son) himself, about his experience with growing up and later acceptance of himself. But then I havent seen any autobiographies from him, so could be a made up theory.

    Not sure about the racist bit but body shaming and conformity yeah I get it. Always wondered about that story, that and Whose Little Bird Am I? Talk about suspense!…. if you are 2,3,4 age. Lost and needing to find where you belong, great themes for a small child. Way to make a kid feel secure. :(

    People who’ve ever seen a cygnet (baby swan) don’t have to ask what that story is about. Cygnets really do look like very ugly ducklings.

    These must be the same kids who hated the Icarus myth. Not sure whether the Weingartens think that these classics should be retired or that today’s youth is too cynical.
