The CCA was formed by comics publishers (William Gaines of MAD fame and others) in an attempt to preempt congressional action based on the testimony of Wertham. It backfired and Gaines quickly left the group. It destroyed his business leaving only MAD Magazine to carry on, as it was not considered a “comic book”
Great strip today. I’ve heard of this guy and what he did, but I don’t know that much about him. I did recently download a pdf copy of his book and plan to at least browse through it, especially once I begin reading a history of comics that I bought at Barnes & Noble earlier this year.
The CCA was awful. Not only did it suppress the more gory and violent comics, it also tamed deep ones like Batman. After its implementation, the Joker went from devious, dangerous murderer to prankster. (All of Batman’s foes went through similar adaptations.) This led to the incredibly awful parody that was the Batman TV series starring Adam West.
The CCA died when some publishers began ignoring it, distributors let it slide, and parents never noticed. By the early 1970s it was effectively dead.
