When I was growing up (my grandparents are from Italy), we always ate the pasta first and the meatballs after.
You got spaghetti with no meatballs, you got a vegetarian entree. You got meatballs with no spaghetti, you got diddly.
I have always said meatballs and spaghetti. So there! It’s the flow of the language that counts (and of course, everyone may flow differently!).
And this is why reading the comics is such a fun and semi-educational waste of time.
It’s in descending order of quantity. The spaghetti takes up more space than the meatballs, and fish takes up more space than the chips.
Meat and potatoes: Check
Hamburger and fries: Check
Franks and beans: Check
Ham and eggs: Tie
Consuela is on to something here.
Spaghetti (which has protein, of course) is the main dish, the meatballs are an add-on.
