I disagree with one point. Riker absolutely knew that Troi was crazy. He just liked her that way. (Do note that EVERY chick Riker hooked up with either had major issues, was a hologram, or both.)
It always seemed to me that every episode after season 2 took place almost entirely in the Holodeck — a device for lazy writers to write westerns or Sherlock Holmes mysteries or sappy love fantasies, with plenty of snarky comments for the android to get cheap laughs instead of science fiction
