Actually, ears do have covers. However, most people have never used the muscles in the ear flaps to cover the ear canals. I worked with man who knew a gunsmith as a child. The gunsmith would test fire behind his shop into a barrel of water. The gunsmith knew how to close his ear flaps an had no hearing loss. Many people can wiggle their nose and make the nostrils flare. Few practice closing their nostrils.
