I looked up the difference between sympathy and empathy, it seems the usage of the word is correct here. Basically, and I am using my own terms here so I can understand the difference better, empathy is sympathy on steroids. Sympathy is caring a little bit, (Oh, I’m so sorry), empathy is caring to a greater degree, (Oh my, what are we going to do?!).
Personally I would have taken this in a different direction. I would like to know who the guy’s friends are, and what makes them worth staying up until 3:00 in the morning. And, maybe next time, tag along, if for no other reason than to be time-keeper.
