People generally use “holidays” to mean the holidays they personally celebrate. To many, “holidays” means Thanksgiving and Christmas and the time between, because it seems to go so fast, and because the focus of that time is on Christmas. In religion it’s the season of Advent, and commercially it’s the most intense advertising time of the year (except maybe for election season). Yes, New Year’s is also a holiday, but it’s different. There’s no religious focus, and no commercial focus – few cards, no gifts, no ads; the only people who expect New Year’s sales are booze dealers. I know people who take down their Christmas decorations the day after and it’s like it was never there, even though the religious Christmas season lasts until Epiphany on January 6.

And if the Pilgrim’s beliefs had prevailed, we’d have had none of the Christmas hoopla in the first place. They knew that Christ’s birthday was not in December and that pagan holidays had been usurped as a cover in the early days of Christianity. They expressly forbade anyone from celebrating Christmas, insisted that everyone work as if it were a regular day (unless it happened to land on Sunday which was holy), and FINED anyone who was caught celebrating. This is part of why they were called the Puritans – they wanted a PURE Christianity without it being sullied with all the pagan practices – trees, lights, gifts, eggs, bunnies, etc.

In fact, they were the originators of the so-called “War on Christmas.” Learn some real history, please.

The Holidays: Columbus Day to Martin Luther King’s Birthday. Maybe even out to Presidents’ Day in February. Love the days off work. It’s a long road to Memorial Day.

Toss Wolfie a cube of cheese wrapped in crisp bacon… see how lively and alert he will be in snagging that treat. .
