When you become so good, and take on so much work, that prospective clients go elsewhere. Boeing built a great little 12 passenger airliner called the Model 247. They were so overwhelmed with orders that customers went elsewhere. Douglas was unable to sell the DC-1 and DC-2. But they struck gold with a demand for good airliners in the DC-3 right at the time Boeing was turning away customers for the 247. Never heard of the 247? Because everyone bought DC-3s. Some are still flying more than 85 years later.
