Why pretend that there is a power outage? Use your authority as a parent and send them outside to play.I’m getting very tired of my generation complaining about zombie kids when were were the ones who gave them electronic entertainment in the first place.
I should add that it does take a lot of energy and patience and determination to not resort to electronics to entertain children, but the results are so worth it. I have a friend who turns on a video every time their 18 month old eats. They claim that he eats better, but I think it’s just laziness on the parents part. I read to my kids while I fed them (as babies) and both were early readers who devour books now (not literally).

Video games, computer games, TV, etc. — great babysitters when you tire of being parents.
