I hire a lot of people and never hire on the spot. Even if I have no one else, I always say we have 2 more interviews to do for this position..Likewise, I’ve only been hired on the spot once in 25 years of working.

Where I work, in addition to undergoing a job interview, candidates present a seminar to the whole branch on their previous work. Although there is the usual Q & A at the seminar, the ensuing discussion among branch members could not possibly occur in the presence of a candidate, and typically involves two days of emails among branch members.

send in the application. if you get picked – you and a few dozen to a few hundred get to write tests. Pass and you get more tests. Pass. Then there’s the interview. Pass that and you go in the pool. Meaning – you don’t go to work, you go home. And wait for up to 2 years for a letter saying come join us!
